The makings of a Compliance Officer:

CO 's should ideally have:

• Good analytical skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Good understanding of the business
• Conversant with regulatory requirements for sphere of business
• Objective and proactive approach
• Ability to enforce independence where required

CO's will need the following to operate effectively:

• Support of senior management
• Support of business unit leaders
• Un-ambiguous reporting lines
• Adequate resourcing
• Clearly defined structure
• Defined scope of work
• Realistic apportionment of responsibilities.

Typical CO Job Description

• To assist, advise and monitor operating units on a regular basis, assuring that all stakeholders are aware of their compliance responsibilities.
• Develop and implement appropriate policies and procedures and controls in line with the regulatory requirements.
• Identifying and correcting weaknesses in the compliance process through an ongoing internal compliance examination process (both announced and unannounced internal exams and testing with follow up
• Manage relationships with the regulator and external counsel
• Education and training of personnel
• Informing and advising senior management on all compliance matters and report back on success of current programme

Current qualifications required

• Legal or accountancy degree, with at least 3 years experience in the financial services field; or
• Successful completion of any specific financial services industry or compliance related course recognised by the registrar with 3 years experience in the financial services field; or
• Currently appointed as a Compliance Officer by virtue of a law other than the Act relating to the financial services industry; or
• Be an accredited member of the Compliance Institute of South Africa, or any other organisation recognized by the registrar with at least 3 years experience in the financial service field.
