This year marks 15 years since Compli-Serve KZN started. As we acknowledge this milestone, it’s great to look back on how it all began, and how far we have come. Regional Director of Compli-Serve Kwazulu-Natal, Catherine Cooper was exiting corporate life in Johannesburg as an advisor and consultant to the legal and insurance sectors and longed to return to KZN, where she is from, for a change in personal and professional pace. She crossed paths with a friend who could suggest compliance services as an option to offer, introducing her to Richard Rattue – Managing Director of Compli-Serve SA. An instant rapport began, which remains today, and through this serendipitous start, Compli-Serve KZN was founded in 2006.

Through humble beginnings to save money on start-up costs, the goal to have an office in all major cities of South Africa soon took shape – adding Kwazulu-Natal, also servicing the Eastern Cape to the pair of offices based in Cape Town (head office) and Johannesburg.

The core management team of Richard Rattue, Jan Scholtz (Director of Compli-Serve JHB), James George (Compliance Manager) and Tanya van Aswegen (General Manager) were the only four members of the entire Compli-Serve SA company at the time, and all remain today. The business now has 24 employees across the country, including Namibia.

Then and now

Some 15 years ago, FAIS was in its infancy, at just two years old and financial services was not well represented physically in KZN. Today, it’s a thriving hub where major financial services call centres are based. Compli-Serve offers a variety of compliance services within the financial sector, and though we have grown significantly over the years, focusing on good relationships with clients has been a core part of the business, and still is.

“We are grateful for our loyal client base, which has kept us afloat and within the fast flow of regulation in the industry. It may have been simpler to do compliance 15 years ago but the joy of working in a strong and reliable team with a leader like Richard at my side, has made it an incredible journey so far,” says Catherine Cooper.

“The last 15 years have seen many changes in our team and in the industry, and we can’t wait to see where the next 15 years take us,” says Richard Rattue.
